Gore offers YEAR ROUND TROUT FISHING, with the Oklahoma Wildlife Department stocking 100,000 rainbow trout annually at three sites, the River Road Access Area, MarVal Resort and Tenkiller Powerhouse.  These sites are stocked weekly in March, April, and May; biweekly the rest of the year.  For the stocking schedule, click here
The Lower Illinois River with its trout fishery, along with numerous recreational areas such as Tenkiller and Greenleaf Lakes and the R. S. Kerr Reservoir have helped make Gore proud to be known not only as "The Trout Capital of Oklahoma" but also the "Gateway to the Lakes" and a "Sportsmans Paradise".

Sustained springtime water releases bring white bass on their spawning run all the way to the Webbers Falls Lock and Dam and the dams at Tenkiller and Greenleaf Lakes.  These releases also attract walleye, striped bass and even paddlefish.  During the hot summer months you can find stripers, walleye and sauger on the lower end of the Illinois River.

A Little Bit About Gore

The settlement of Gore, known originally as Campbell, started when the Arkansas Valley Railroad later known as the Iron Mountain Railroad came into the Illinois District, Cherokee nation in 1886.

On August 10, 1888 the first post office was established in Dr. W.W. Campbell's general store.  David Barrick was the first Postmaster.  The depot was erected in 1889 as was the Mayes Hotel.  Other hotels such as the Commercial and the Majestic were soon to follow since the railroad stop known as Illinois Station was a thriving center for the shipment of agricultural goods - chiefly cotton and potatoes.

By 1903 a town was laid out and named Campbell, Indian Territory.  Following statehood the name of the town was changed to Gore in honor of Senator Thomas P. Gore.  A tremendous agricultural existence along with numerous recreational areas has helped make Gore proud to be known not only as the "Trout Capital of Oklahoma" but also the "Gateway to the Lakes" and a "Sportsman's Paradise".
